Emily Vancamp as Sharon Carter in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”

Here’s an example of what we call a “soft no”. Sharon turns down Steve’s offer in a way that’s meant not to insult him but never actually uses the word “no”.

Steve clearly gets the message, though, and importantly offers to leave her alone. Sharon’s comment afterwards gives him an opportunity to try again later, but he doesn’t press and respects her rejection of his company even though it’s probably hurt his feelings a bit.

Just in case you ever wonder “What would Captain America do?”; there you go.

Can you imagine Harry trying to parent his children and tell them they need to settle down but then James Sirius just pulls out his edition of Harry James Potter: A History and goes, “When you were my age you followed an alleged mass murderer into a tunnel, faced a werewolf and nearly got killed by dementors. I think I can go to The Bent-Winged Snitches concert.”

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

Built between 1858 and 1881, this asylum is well known for being the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in the entirety of North America. While it was originally built as a safe haven for the mentally ill, it eventually became a nightmare to most of it’s patients. The original hospital was build to accommodate only 250 patients, but it reached it’s peak of 2,400 patients in the 1950’s. Although the building was beautifully built with many windows to allow light, the conditions were terrible, as overcrowding caused living conditions to deplete.

This particular asylum was known well for it’s women’s ward in the early years. In those days, men could have their wives committed for just about anything. Depression, greed, menopause, asthma, inheritance, etc. A man could fall in love with the woman next door or just get tired of his wife and drop her off at the front doors. These women would spend the rest of their lives behind the asylum walls. The only person with permission to check them out were their husbands, who left them behind.

While the medical practices used on mental patients were renowned as “breakthrough operations” in their time can now only be described as cruel. The most popular method of treatment for the worse patients was Lobotomy, which was an operation done on the brain that severed ties to and from the prefrontal cortex. This was meant to cause a calmed state in the patients. However, for the most part, patients that underwent this surgery were thrown into a permanently vegetative state. Many patients were also exposed to shock therapy and other generally torturous experiments and treatments. Additionally, patients that could not be controlled were thrown in cages for days, some even weeks.

The asylum was finally closed in 1994 and is now mostly used to paranormal tours, but is otherwise abandoned. As can be expected from such a wretched place, there are literally hundreds of different paranormal accounts regarding the grounds. People have reported hearing women screaming “help me” and “get me out of here.” A woman on a paranormal tour claimed that she heard a young woman begging “please call my husband.” Additionally, people touring the buildings have reported feeling followed and feeling someone breathing down the back of their neck. The head paranormal investigator in the area reports the spirit of a 9 year old girl that he regards as a very active spirit. Born in the asylum, she lived a short life before succumbing to pneumonia. The investigator states that he’ll ask the young girl, named Lily, to do tasks. These tasks include tapping on walls/windows, turning a flash light on and off, and once tugging on the investigator’s hair. She was able to complete these tasks almost every single time he asked.

The Hosting Game is a paranormal game whose sole purpose is to summon three ghosts. Before starting, make sure that you are alone in the house.
You need:
Three matches
A clock
A writing utensil
A sheet of paper
Step 1.) Select a small, empty, windowless room in your house. This is the hosting room.  If you can’t find a room without windows, just cover the windows in the room that you choose so that it is impenetrable to light.
Step 2.) Wait until it is dark outside. Turn off all the lights in the house except for the light in the hosting room. If there is no light bulb in the hosting room, you can put a candle or flashlight in there. Leave pen, paper, and clock, in the hosting room.
Step 3.) The game begins now. Go to the furthest point in your house from the hosting room. Walk from room to room, making your way back to the hosting room. In each room you pass through, stop and call out, “I will be ready soon.”
Step 4.) When you get to the hosting room, take the sheet of paper and write the following on it:
“You are invited to a gathering, hosted by [your name]. It takes place at [current time]. Bring your friends.”
Now place the paper on the floor in the middle of the room.
Step 5.) Stand in the doorway of the hosting room (make sure you’re facing the inside of the room) and say, “I am ready. You may come in.”
Step 6.) Turn off the light, turn around, and walk out. Stand outside the doorway with your back facing the hosting room.
Step 7.) Take out the three matches and hold them in your hand. Count out loud from one to ten. At ten, strike the first match.
If the match lights in the first strike, say out loud, “I am glad to see you. Thank you for coming.”
If the match doesn’t light, drop it and immediately repeat the process with the next two matches.
If the third match doesn’t light on the first strike, you have uninvited guests which is extremely bad. Do not turn around. Immediately run to the nearest light source (not the one in the hosting room) and turn it on. The party is over.
Step 8.) If the third match lit on the first strike, stand very still and listen carefully. You will hear faint voices or whispering behind you. Do not turn around.
To end: Out loud, say “Thank you for coming, goodbye.” Then walk to the nearest light source and turn it on. The game is over and your guests are gone.
Important: Do not turn around or look behind you at any point during the game.

LIVING DOLL
This game is similar to “Hide and Seek Alone/One Man Hide and Seek,” but it’s more dangerous. If “Hide and Seek Alone” is a play to meet ghosts, then “Living Doll” is a play asking the ghost to kill you. People say that the huge difference between the two games is that in the “Living Doll” game, the doll’s face can actually change.
If the doll finds you, it smiles.
Items needed:
2 mirrors
A human doll (Japanese human dolls work the best)
A candlestick
A piece of your hair
Salt (about 5 spoonfuls) wrapped in paper
Things to keep in mind:
You must do it alone. There can’t be anyone else around.
If the doll finds you, don’t make any sound.
Don’t spray all the salt on yourself. You need it for later.
Don’t run away or the doll will chase after you.
You must end the game before sunrise or the spirit will stay behind.
After the game, take the doll to a shrine.
To play:
Make the 2 mirrors face each other.
Place the doll in the middle and light the candle.
Wait until it’s 12 o’clock midnight.
While pointing at the doll, say: ”Atarashii karada wo oite okimasu, douzo otsukai kudasai.” (I’m giving you a new body, please forgive me.)
After that, shout "Asobimasho!" (Let’s play!) 5 times.
Whether or not you hear a noise that came out of nowhere, don’t worry. It’s simply an indication that your preparations has been done correctly.
Take the salt with you and say, "Watashi wo sadashite kudasai. mitsuketara inochi wo agemasu."(Please find me. If you do, I’ll give you my life.)
After that, go to your room or a large room, turn off all the lights, and spray some salt on yourself with your back to the door.
If you feel like you’re in danger, go hide in a closet.
To end:
While holding the salt, go to the room where the candle is.
When you’re in front of the candle, say"Anata no makedesu, oshimai." (You lose, it’s over now!) 5 times.
Then turn off the candle and spray salt on yourself.
Find the doll and spray salt on it.
Turn on all the lights and create a happy atmosphere - like playing your favorite song (this is very important!). Do that for at least an hour.
Make sure you take the doll to a shrine within 3 days after the game.

Waverly Hills Sanitorium

Rumored to be one of the scariest places in america, Waverly Hills began construction in 1908 and opened for business in 1910 as a small two story hospital. The hospital was, after much construction and expansion in 1924 due to the spread of tuberculosis, considered one of the most well equipped hospitals of it’s time. It could accommodate 400 patients at the time. However, in 1961, the cure for TB was released and rendered the facilities obsolete. In 1962, the hospital was reopened under a new name but eventually was closed down by the state in 1980.

The hospital was so large, that it was considered its own community by the state, and even had it’s own zipcode! Although the community was great, treatments were not. Since there were not antibiotics quite yet, doctors were constantly using experimental treatments on patients that were often painful and left many scars. Some patients were even disfigured. Many treatments proved fatal. The most popular feature of this hospital was infamously named the body chute, which was a long dark tunnel used to carry the dead bodies out of the hospital discreetly as not to lower the morale of the patients.

There are literally hundreds of different reports of different ghosts being seen in the hospital, which isn’t surprising considering the size of the place. People have seen a little boy on the third floor, rolling a ball. People have even seen a ball rolling on its own from one room to the next. Many people have reported seeing multiple shadow people around the building. It is not odd to see several in one area at one time. Others have reported seeing a woman with her wrists slit screaming “someone save me”.

Room 502 seems to be a hot spot in the hospital. Legend has it, the room was the site of two suicides by nurses. One hanged herself, while the other jumped out of the window. Many people have experienced seeing a woman hanging or sitting in the corner crying and rocking back and forth. Additionally, many people have heard voices and have even reported being physically pushed. People outside of the building have also witnessed a woman falling from a window and disappearing before reaching the ground.

Within the body chute, people have reported seeing people running, hearing crying, and hearing people whispering or laughing.

The building is currently only used for tours and paranormal investigations. It has been on several different popular shows on the paranormal, and has now be bought and is to be renovated and turned into a “haunted hotel.”

Personally, I can’t imagine anything still residing in that hospital being too pleased about the renovations…
